MEZCAL
THE RIGHT WAY
ancestral RESPECT
TRADITION PRESERVED IN
At the heart of our mezcal lies a deep reverence for time-honored tradition. Every step, from the hand-harvested agave to the slow wood-fired roasting and natural fermentation, is carried out with traditional respect. We take no shortcuts, honoring the wisdom passed down through generations of Maestros Mezcaleros who guide this craft with patience and precision.
Working hand in hand with these guardians of the Oaxacan tradition, we preserve the essence of mezcal as it has been made for centuries, pure, artisanal, and rooted in the land. The result is not just a spirit, but a living expression of heritage, crafted with devotion and respect for those who came before us.
86 was born from a deep love for mezcal— not only for the spirit itself, but for the passion, tradition, and ancestral knowledge that define its alchemical history. We wanted to become part of that legacy: to honor it, celebrate it, and most importantly, to create a unique global mezcal experience for everyone.

José Santiago is a fourth-generation mezcalero from Matatlán, Oaxaca, known for blending ancestral techniques with bold innovation. Trained in traditional pechuga methods, he now creates distinctive destilados con—expressions infused during distillation with botanicals, fruits, herbs, and his signature tobacco espadín.
A committed environmental advocate, José transforms mezcal by-products into adobe, paper, and other sustainable materials, building his palenque and future guest spaces from the agave itself.
Working alongside artists and craftsmen, he designs each small-batch release as a piece of art—unique, responsible, and true to the agave. His mission: preserve tradition, push creative boundaries, and craft mezcal for a more sustainable future.
